MBBR (Moving bed biofilm reactor)

MBBR (Moving bed biofilm reactor) is now the common name for biological treatment process invented by Professor Halvard Odegaard in Trondheim in the late eighties.

It is an aerobic or anoxic biofilm process. The microorganisms grow as a biofilm on protected surface of carriers. This makes it possible to get a highly adapted microflora and get degradation of toxic and/or persistent substances. It can also be operated with high organic load where only part of the organic substances is degraded or under nutrients limited conditions. This is a common solution in combination with activated sludge process. The process can be also thermophilic. The carriers are suspended in the bioreactor either by aeration or by mechanical mixers. A sieve at the outlet keeps the carriers in the reactor, excess biomass is sloughed off and is discharged with water. Mixing of the carriers ensure transport of substrate, nutrients and oxygen to the biofilm and removes metabolites.

The MBBR can be often used in the existing tanks. The biofilm growth depends on the type of treated wastewater and proper selection of carriers. HYDROTECH supplies carriers available on the market, the choice depends on the requirements of the specific project.
